Are you ready to build a better life for yourself ?

The rest of the story if you’re interested …

The current lock-down and restrictions we are having to face now are very unfortunate. We have lost normalcy and are forced into this new way of living. Many people are suffering in various ways and forms, and that is just sad. But this should be temporary. Yes, we will come out of this. It will take some time, but we will win this fight and get back to what we were doing before this nightmare hit us. But the question is: Do you really want to go back to whatever it was you were doing before?! Worse, You might not even have that option with all the closures and layoffs that are happening sadly.

I am not talking about getting to see your loved ones and your friends again and spending time with them. Everyone wants that back of course! I am talking about everything around that. Are you looking forward to going back to your routine? To your work? Were you satisfied with where life had led you? Or were you living with a feeling that something was missing? That there was just “more” to life? Simply put: Are you looking forward to going back to your old life? Or would you rather build a new more exciting one for yourself now that you actually have a little more time on your hands?

I have always felt there was more to life than what I was doing or achieving.

I always felt there was something missing in my life, but I was unable to get any clear answer for myself as to what “that thing” was. I was so busy with my career mainly that I didn’t even really bother to take time to try and actually find “that thing”. Frankly, I was also afraid! Have you ever been afraid of looking yourself in the mirror, looking at what you have been doing so far, what you have built until now, what you have become, and end up being disappointed?! My biggest fear has always been to look back at my life with regret. I am terrified to get to the end of the road, turn and look back, and not like what I see. Have you ever had that feeling? I know I have! And I have been looking for meaning in my life for some time now, a purpose, a calling, so that I don’t get to that point of regret at the end of my life.

I don’t know if you’ll relate to this, but I had fallen into a routine that mostly consisted of long hours at work, either in the office or on the road. I was a mid-level manager with a team and a P&L responsibility. I had meetings to organize, conference calls to attend, and client accounts to manage. I had to challenge everyone one to achieve more, and I was also challenged for the same reasons by my management. The monthly results reviews needed to be ready on time and I had to demonstrate that I was doing better, with fewer resources, every time. It was the constant race towards more sales and more profits. That meant more responsibilities and inevitably, more stress. I didn’t know any more if I was hitting the numbers out of pleasure of hitting the numbers, or out of fear of not hitting them! Being driven by pleasure is very different from being driven by fear. I was still enjoying my time mostly, but I could also feel the constant pressure weighing in on me in a negative way.

I would come back home with a pile of frustrations and thoughts in the back of my mind still working on how to deliver on the numbers. I tried to keep all of that out the house but it was difficult. Especially when I got that call during the weekend from my boss or my client, that starts with “I don’t mean to bother you at this time …”

Did you ever get those calls? I hated them!

And that was eating up from the little time I had with my kids to start with. So on top of not being really present, I wasn’t the most pleasant of fathers during that time either. I found myself getting frustrated at my kids, and just stopping to play with them after only a short time. They would go back to the TV and I would go back to my emails.

I had the same short temper issues with my wife also. Our conversations did not last that long to start with as I wasn’t really present again, and they seemed to often end in an argument, for no apparent reason!

I realized I had to do something when I saw my friend’s father getting to retirement age. The guy was a rather successful businessman who went through life in a decent corporate job. He had travelled and seen many things in his days. But you could feel he was simply disappointed with something! He was constantly frustrated with the world at large, being sarcastic and just negative about mostly everything. To make things worse, he had also lost connection with his wife. You could feel they were not close: they each had their own lives, but they were just living together, nothing more. I didn’t want to end that way! I knew I had to change something in my life, and that I had to change it fast.

I knew my issue was about finding fulfillment in something. So, I tried a couple of new hobbies. Isn’t that what you would do? I first tried my luck at sports, and I took on cross-fit for a while. I injured myself and had to find something else! I tried some old sports I had practiced when I was young: first tennis, and then basketball. I even took on wakeboarding. I found myself trying to fill my time with experiences that did not really bring me satisfaction on the long run. Yes they were fun, but they didn’t fill the void… Then I moved on to buying some “big boys’ toys”! What would you start with? A car of course! So, I bought my first muscle car, to shortly after, wanting to exchange it for another one without any apparent reason, just for wanting it to be a bit faster and stronger. Again, that didn’t fill the void either, and it sure didn’t help getting me to be more present with my family!

As I was continuing to search the Internet for new hobbies and things to fill my life with, in order to find purpose and feel fulfilled, I stumbled upon a rather simple training offer. An offer to build the life I was dreaming about, so that I could work on projects that were meaningful to me, and at the same time, improve the quality of my relationships with my immediate family. I did not hesitate, and I jumped on the occasion. I went all in and burnt through the material. Gradually, my life started to make more sense and I discovered the value in my journey. My projects took on a whole new meaning and my energy levels went through the roof. I was doing more things for my own work, and I was still finding the time to be present with my kids and with my wife. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t easy and it took time and effort and some money, especially at the start. There were even times where I felt this was just too much. But I just knew I couldn’t go back to the old ways and habits. There was no way I was going back to feeling lost, frustrated and unfulfilled. There was no way I was going to go through life to be disappointed at the end.
